Industry Pallet Guide
Practical pointers for choosing pallet grades and sizes by industry
Pallets by Industry
General recommendations; your customers and equipment may have their own requirements
Retail & E-Commerce
Recommended: Grade A & B, 48x40"
Retail operations need pallets that can withstand multiple trips and look presentable in distribution centers. E-commerce requires durable pallets for frequent handling and long-distance shipping.
- High trip count for returns and restocking
- Clean appearance for customer-facing warehouses
- Standard 48x40 size for compatibility
- Heat-treated for international shipments
Manufacturing & Assembly
Recommended: Grade B & C, Various Sizes
Manufacturing facilities need cost-effective pallets for internal material handling and work-in-process storage. Custom sizes often required for specific production lines and equipment.
- Heavy-duty pallets for machinery and components
- Custom sizes for production line integration
- Repairable pallets for closed-loop systems
- Grade C acceptable for internal use only
Grocery & Food Distribution
Recommended: Grade A & B, GMA Standard 48x40"
Grocery distribution runs largely on the 48x40 GMA-style pallet, and clean, intact pallets matter when products are handled near food. Food safety rules and customer specifications vary, so check current regulations and your customers' requirements.
- 48x40 GMA-style size for supply chain compatibility
- No protruding nails or loose boards
- Clean, dry pallets
- Check customer and regulatory requirements
Construction & Building Materials
Recommended: Grade B & C, Heavy-Duty
Construction sites need rugged pallets capable of supporting heavy building materials. Often exposed to outdoor conditions. Durability and weight capacity more important than appearance.
- Heavy-duty construction for bricks, blocks, tiles
- Weather-resistant hardwood preferred
- Ask for the rated load capacity
- Rough job site conditions expected
Logistics & Warehousing
Recommended: Grade A & B, Standard Sizes
3PLs and warehouses need reliable pallets that can handle diverse products and frequent movement. Standardization is key for efficient operations and racking compatibility.
- Standard sizes for rack compatibility
- 4-way entry for forklift efficiency
- Consistent quality for automation systems
- High trip count for multiple cycles
Arts, Crafts & DIY
Recommended: Grade C, Various Sizes
Makers and DIY enthusiasts prefer affordable pallets for creative projects. Character marks and weathering often desirable for rustic aesthetic. Perfect source of reclaimed wood.
- Economy Grade C perfect for projects
- Weathered wood adds character
- Furniture, garden beds, wall art
- Small quantities can be requested
Automotive & Machinery
Recommended: Grade A & B, Custom Sizes
Automotive industry requires pallets designed for heavy parts, irregular shapes, and specialized fixtures. Custom configurations common for specific components and assembly line integration.
- Heavy-duty for engines, transmissions
- Custom sizes for specialized parts
- Fixture-compatible designs
- Reusable closed-loop systems
Agriculture & Garden Supply
Recommended: Grade B & C, Heavy-Duty
Agricultural operations need pallets that can handle heavy bags of feed, seed, and fertilizer. Often used outdoors in challenging conditions. Cost-effectiveness important for seasonal operations.
- Weather-resistant construction
- Heavy bagged loads
- Moisture exposure common
- Cost-effective Grade B/C suitable
Special Requirements by Industry
Heat Treatment (ISPM-15)
Required for: Wood packaging in most international shipments
ISPM 15 is the international standard for wood packaging in trade. Heat treatment brings the wood to a core temperature of 56 °C for at least 30 minutes, and treated pallets carry the IPPC mark with the HT code. Check the destination country's current import rules before you ship.
GMA-Style 48x40 Pallets
Common in: Grocery, Retail, Food distribution
The 48x40 pallet, named after the Grocery Manufacturers Association specification, is the most common pallet size in the United States. Many retailers and distributors specify it, so check your customers' receiving requirements.
Load Ratings
Important for: Heavy machinery, Building materials, Automotive
For heavy loads, ask the partner supplier for the pallet's rated capacity in static and dynamic use, and for any test documentation your customers require. Capacity depends on design, wood, condition, and how the load sits on the pallet.

Request a QuoteFrequently Asked Questions
How do I choose the right pallet grade for my industry?
Grade A fits export, automation, and customer-facing loads; Grade B suits most warehouse, logistics, and manufacturing uses; Grade C works for one-way shipping, internal moves, and DIY.
Which industries require heat-treated pallets?
Most international shipments that use wood packaging need ISPM 15 treated pallets, and heat-treated pallets carry the HT mark. Some customers ask for them domestically too. Check current regulations for your destination.
Do major retailers require specific pallet standards?
Many grocery and big-box retailers specify 48x40 GMA-style pallets. Requirements differ between retailers, so check the receiving guidelines of each customer.
Can I get documentation for compliance audits?
If you need heat-treatment records or load ratings, say so in your quote request. What is available depends on the partner supplier.
What sizes are most common for different sectors?
48x40 GMA is standard for grocery and retail, 48x48 is common for drums and chemicals, 42x42 for paint and telecom, and 36x36 for beverages. You can also request custom sizes.
Which pallets work with automated systems?
Consistent Grade A pallets and block pallets are the usual choice for conveyors, palletizers, and automated storage. Share your equipment specs in the request so suppliers can match them.
Can I request mixed grades or sizes?
Yes. You can ask for more than one grade or size in the same request, for example Grade A for export loads and Grade B for internal moves. Partner suppliers quote what they can supply.
How does delivery work?
Delivery or pickup is arranged through partner suppliers in New Jersey. After you request a quote, a partner supplier follows up with options and timing for your location.
Can I get engineered or custom pallets?
You can request custom dimensions and configurations for automotive, machinery, or other products where standard sizes do not fit. Partner suppliers quote price and lead time.
